The Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT)
A free, research-based burnout assessment designed to identify and measure four core burnout symptoms.

You sleep and you are still tired.
Small things make you snap.
You have read the same email four times, and work has started to feel like "whatever".
When things like these become part of your everyday life, it's worth paying attention to the pattern.
The BAT helps you look more closely at the most common burnout symptoms.
23 statements, est. 10 minutes
What the burnout assessment measures
The BAT measures the four core burnout symptoms below, giving you a score for each and an overall result.
Feeling drained, physically and mentally, and not recovering the way you used to.
Exhaustion
Mental fog. Trouble concentrating, remembering things, or thinking clearly.
Cognitive impairment
Pulling away from your work. Less interest, less energy, more "whatever" or numbness.
Mental distance
Reacting more strongly than you expect to, and feeling less in control of it.
Emotional impairment
What can a burnout assessment tell you?
Burnout symptoms don't always appear together or with the same intensity. You might notice persistent exhaustion long before you start having trouble concentrating or feeling emotionally distant from your work.
The BAT looks at these experiences separately, helping you identify which symptoms are more pronounced and how frequently they occur.
Your results include an overall burnout symptom score, individual scores for the four dimensions, and an indication of how your scores compare with research-based reference values.
The results can help you recognize patterns that are easy to overlook when you're focused on getting through the working day.
An assessment, not a diagnosis
The BAT is a screening tool. It can help you recognize patterns in your symptoms, but it cannot establish a diagnosis or explain what's causing them.
If you're concerned about what you're experiencing, discuss it with your GP or another qualified health professional.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if I'm experiencing burnout?
Common burnout symptoms include persistent exhaustion, growing mental distance from work, difficulty concentrating, and changes in emotional regulation. These symptoms can also occur for other reasons. A burnout assessment can help you recognize patterns, but it cannot establish a diagnosis.
Can I take a burnout test online?
Yes. The Burnout Assessment Tool (BAT) is a research-based questionnaire that measures four core burnout symptoms. This online version includes 23 statements about your experiences at work and takes approximately 10 minutes to complete.
What does my burnout assessment score mean?
Your results include an overall score and separate scores for exhaustion, mental distance, cognitive impairment, and emotional impairment. Higher scores indicate more frequent burnout symptoms. The results are interpreted using research based reference values and should be treated as indicators rather than definitive conclusions.
Is the Burnout Assessment Tool scientifically validated?
The BAT was developed by researchers at KU Leuven and has been studied for its reliability and validity. It is designed to assess burnout symptoms systematically, but it does not replace a clinical assessment.
